Water stain on a ceiling indicating a hidden plumbing leak in a New Hampshire home
A hidden leak rarely announces itself. Here are the signs Nashua homeowners notice first — and the five-minute meter test that confirms it.

What are the first signs of a hidden leak?
Hidden leaks are usually found by their side effects, not by seeing water. If two or more of these are true, it is worth investigating:
- A water bill that climbed without a change in household use
- The sound of running water when every fixture is off
- A warm or damp spot on a floor
- Staining, bubbling paint or soft drywall on a wall or ceiling
- A musty smell in one room, closet or basement
- Mineral crust or corrosion at a visible pipe joint
How do I check for a leak with my water meter?
Turn off every fixture and water-using appliance, then look at your water meter. If the dial or digital indicator moves at all over 15 minutes, water is leaving the system somewhere.
That test tells you a leak exists. It does not tell you where — which is where detection equipment saves you from opening walls at random.
Why does this matter more in a New Hampshire home?
Slow leaks in exterior walls, crawl spaces and unheated basements tend to get worse through a Southern NH winter, and wet framing invites mold long before you see water. Finding one early is far cheaper than repairing what it damaged.
When should I call a plumber?
If you have any active water you cannot trace, or evidence of moisture inside finished space, call. Expedition Plumbing keeps 24-hour availability for urgent leaks and offers same-day and next-day scheduling for everything else.
