Slow-draining kitchen sink showing standing water from a repeat clog
Clearing the same drain every month is not maintenance — it is a symptom. Here is what repeat clogs usually mean in a Southern New Hampshire home.

Isn't a clog just a clog?
A one-time clog is normal. A clog that comes back in the same place every few weeks usually means one of two things: the buildup was pushed along instead of removed, or the pipe itself has a defect holding material back.
What causes repeat clogs?
- Grease buildup that has hardened along the pipe wall
- A sag or low spot where water and waste pool
- An offset or separated joint catching debris
- Tree root intrusion at a joint — very common in older Nashua, Manchester and Merrimack neighborhoods with mature tree cover
- Insufficient slope from an earlier repair or renovation
- A partially collapsed section of older pipe
Are chemical drain cleaners safe to use?
We do not recommend them. Chemical cleaners can eat at older piping and rarely clear hardened buildup. They also mask the timeline, so the underlying defect goes undiagnosed for another year.
What actually fixes it?
Proper drain cleaning removes the buildup rather than boring a hole through it. If the line still fouls quickly, a camera inspection shows whether the pipe needs drain repair and drainage restoration — diagnose first, dig only if needed.
